The Price of Freedom

‘give me your tired, your poor,
your huddled masses yearning to breathe free’;
I’ll make you empty promises,
then your children I’ll decree

give me ‘the wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me’;
I’ll build border armies,
and internment camps for thee

‘I lift my lamp beside the golden door!’,
and then slam it shut, so you’ll pass through nevermore

Ask the Dusk

Slowly, sun begins to set,
Twilight’s colors igniting the sky

Light warily fading beneath horizon,
Not quite ready for goodbye

Patiently, I wait, for stars to shine,
Illuminating hungry eyes

As dark descends in silky silence,
Waking mortal souls once shy

Where, lying bare, to moon and you
I ask dusk to help me fly
